Special Operations Speaks Introduces David W. Blizzard Col. USMC ret.




David W. Blizzard  Col. USMC ret.


Col. Dave Blizzard was born and grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey.  He’s a graduate of Western Maryland College, and he later earned a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan.  He entered the Marine Corps through the OCS program in 1966, and upon completion of The Basic School in June of 1967. he was assigned as a platoon commander with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in the Republic of Vietnam.  He was severely wounded on his first tour.  After spending five months in the US Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, Japan, he was assigned to 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, initially as a platoon commander..  He returned to Vietnam in 1971-1972 where he served as the District Senior Advisor in the Rung Sat Special Zone.  He served outside the Marine Corps from 1980-1983 and followed that with an assignment as the Naval Attache in El Salvador from ’83 to ’86.  After attending Top Level School at the Inter-American Defense College, Col. Blizzard was assigned to the US Special Operations Command.  After five years in USSOCOM he retired with 27 years of service. His awards include the Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the El Salvadoran Medalla de Oro.

Since his retirement from the Marine Corps Colonel Blizzard has served in security-related positions in Mozambique, Guatemala, and ultimately he served as the Chief of Security for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.  He also served on a short contract in Iraq in 2004.

Col. Blizzard’s wife’s name is Sheilah and together they have five children and eight grandchildren.
